Fungal communities play a key role in regulating biodiversity, climate, and global nutrient cycles. Mycorrhizal fungi move carbon and nutrients across ecosystems, drawing down over 13 billion tons of CO2 per year. Yet, underground ecosystems and the fungi they contain have been neglected in climate solutions, biodiversity assessments, and conservation targets.
SPUN is at IUCN WCC 2025 to urge governments, NGOs, and Indigenous peoples organizations to consider mycorrhizal fungi when defining their conservation priorities.
We will be conducting in-person interviews and demonstrations at the IUCN World Conservation Congress! Our goal is to gain insights into the most beneficial data for conservation organizations and policymakers looking to integrate mycorrhizal fungi into their strategies.
