Ashley is a biogeochemist whose work has largely focused on the role of soil microbes in the forest carbon cycle. Through her research, she has demonstrated that mycorrhizal fungi influence the flow of carbon through ecosystems by mediating processes like decomposition, soil respiration, and associations between organic matter and soil mineral surfaces. Ashley is interested in the interplay between aboveground processes and the  transformations occurring beneath them, with the ultimate aim to anticipate and mitigate threats to ecosystem carbon sequestration.
