Underground Explorers

This project will focus on the understudied soil fungal and mycorrhizal diversity within the Monte Desert, Dry Chaco, and Espinal ecoregions of central-western Argentina. Although this underground biodiversity has historically been overlooked, it is a key component of dryland ecosystems. By comparing native vegetation remnants with adjacent vineyards, this study will evaluate how these fungal communities are affected by environmental variables, particularly climate and habitat loss. A major goal will be to better characterize this hidden diversity and share this knowledge directly with local winegrowers. By raising awareness among viticulturists, we will aim to bridge the gap between science and agricultural production, with the ultimate hope of inspiring long-term conservation policies in these threatened ecoregions.
