Underground Explorers

This project aims to investigate, for the first time using molecular methods, the diversity of ectomycorrhizal (ECM) and vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal (VAM) fungi associated with five globally threatened tree species in the Lakes Region of Türkiye. A total of 40 soil and 40 fungal samples will be collected from 26 protected areas, and molecular analyses will employ eDNA metabarcoding targeting the 18S SSU rRNA and ITS2 regions, in conjunction with Sanger sequencing. The project will test the hypothesis that mycorrhizal fungi face an extinction risk parallel to the threat status of their host trees. Furthermore, it will directly contribute to conservation strategies through the assessment of mycorrhizal fungal conservation status, discovery of novel species, and implementation of field-based training and awareness activities for local communities. The project outcomes are expected to enhance global awareness regarding the protection of mycorrhizal fungi.
