Comparative assessment of mycorrhizal fungal diversity across forest and savanna ecosystems in western Uganda (FungiSAVE)

Mycorrhizal fungi underpin terrestrial ecosystem functioning by mediating nutrient cycling, plant productivity, and carbon storage, yet their diversity and distribution across African biomes remain poorly resolved. Here, we investigate patterns of mycorrhizal fungal diversity across contrasting forest and savanna ecosystems in Western Uganda, represented by Kibale National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park. Using environmental DNA metabarcoding, spatial analyses, and environmental characterization, we assess fungal community composition, distribution, and ecological drivers. By linking belowground biodiversity to vegetation, climate, soil, and land-use gradients, this study will provide critical insights into the ecological processes shaping tropical fungal communities and inform biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, and climate-resilient landscape management in East Africa.
