Underground Explorers

This project builds upon the "Atlas of Soil Biodiversity in Mexico," a project carried out between 2023 and 2025. One of its main outcomes was raising awareness among various sectors of the Mexican government about the importance of conserving soil biodiversity and its ecosystem services. Now, the Federal Ministry of Welfare has approached us to evaluate the impact of the "Sembrando Vida" agroecological food production program on soil biodiversity. Together with them, we selected and sampled the soil of 50 plots in 2025. Now we will sequence the samples and conduct field interviews with farmers to assess the management practices that have been carried out in them. The main contribution of this project will be to provide decision-makers with information on the strengths and weaknesses of the "Sembrando Vida" program in conserving soil biodiversity and promoting sustainable food production in areas of high poverty.
