Carbon Cycle

Using molecular and bioinformatics methods, my research is focused on the microbial communities of tropical soils, their role in biogeochemical cycles, and how they are being impacted by land-use and climate change.

I am a postdoctoral researcher in Denmark working on a project aimed at promoting lake restoration across Europe. My research focuses on utilising microbes, including bacteria and mycorrhizal fungi, to enhance the recycling of nutrients, particularly phosphorus, from nutrient-rich sediments dredged from lakes. I am eager to expand my professional network and collaborate with researchers worldwide to further explore these microbial interactions and their potential applications.

In my previous research work, I explored how different AMF taxa changed over time in response to nitrogen fertilisation and reduced irrigation. I'm generally currently working on bioenergy sorghum AMF interaction.

Working on mycorrhiza control over SOM dynamics in mediterranean forests of Chile. Assessing the impact of increased relative abundance of EcM systems due to pine plantation for timber production and cellulose.

From 2020 I was involved in manufacturing mycelium bio-composites from locally available biomass and fungi species. I was able to isolate fungi species from local forests and identify local lingo-cellulose rich biomass to grow mycelium bio-composites in Sri Lanka.

AMF and other fungal roles in bioremediation of contaminated sites

We use low-cost remote, modular sensing devices to measure how environmental variables modulate the abundance of microbial population and their impact on vegetation growth in difficult settings, addressing unknown interactions between soil bacteria and mycorrhizal fungi in complex ecosystems dynamics like soil respiration, carbon cycle and nitrogen fixation.

I am planning to do research in Lichen, that comes under the umbrella of Fungi. Specifically, bio-monitoring the air quality in our country -Bhutan with the use of lichen. This will help to substantiate the expensive air monitoring stations in difficult areas of reach.

Responses and adaptation of fungi to global climate change and impacts to biogeochemical cycles.

I study the impact of mycorrhiza on the distribution, dynamics and functioning of forests. I am also interested at understanding the interactions of the entire soil biota during ecosystem development.

We look at how to use genetic variation of mycorrhizal fungi to improve growth of tropical crops and improve soil structure and carbon sequestration. We also study effects of AMF inoculation on AMF community structure and the interaction with the soil microbiome.

I work on community ecology of ectomycorrhizas in boreal forests and arbuscular mycorrhizas in Mongolian grassland.

My work has been focused on the effects of CO2 in terrestrial ecosystems, the role of soil nutrients in a climate change context, and plant-soil interactions. My research shows that mycorrhizal associations play a major role in the carbon cycle at a global scale, affecting the speed of global warming.

I am a microbial ecologist, biogeochemist, and professor at Boston University with 20+ years of experience leading research teams in ecosystem ecology, soil biogeochemistry, and environmental microbiome science. My research focuses on using molecular and biogeochemistry tools to identify how human-induced global changes – such as warming, elevated carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, nutrient pollution, and urbanization – impact patterns of microbial abundance and activity in forests at the molecular, community, and landscape levels.

Working with undergraduate students at University of Panamá in the Agronomy Faculty into Agroforestry Engineering, ones of our objective is strengthen their capabilities understanding how the soil and their microorganisms working on. Under this focus, We will try to  evaluate the total fungal and mycorrhizal community richness and composition that will vary with elevation due to changes in climatic influences, in addition to soil characteristics and the influence of vegetation. For that, we will be establishing plots  to collect data at several sites across the Comarca Gnabe Bouglé in partnership with GCBC -STRI project. 1) Are plants and microbes in canopy soil and in ground soil  N or P limited ?  2) Does drought by rain removal - decrease or increase gross N mineralization ?
3) and has stronger impact in the epiphytes N uptake than in ground-living herbs ?

My work involves studying and working with soil biodiversity in various degraded sites, such as rangelands, forests, and grasslands. My primary focus is on understanding how to restore and sustain these ecosystems through biological interventions.My research and activities explore the intricate relationships between living organisms in the soil, including microorganisms, fungi, bacteria, plants, and invertebrates.
