Fungal Biodiversity

Working with undergraduate students at the University of Panamá in the Agronomy Faculty in Agroforestry Engineering, one of our objectives is to strengthen their capabilities in understanding how the soil and its microorganisms work. Under this focus, we will try to evaluate the total fungal and mycorrhizal community richness and composition that will vary with elevation due to changes in climatic influences, in addition to soil characteristics and the influence of vegetation. For that, we will be establishing plots to collect data at several sites across the Comarca Ngäbe-Buglé in partnership with the GCBC-STRI project. In addition, our students will be using STRI labs for molecular (DNA) analysis and sequencing of fungal and mycorrhizal communities, working with Dr. Kristin Saltonstall.

Currently, my research explores mycorrhizal associations in orchids.

The interdisciplinary project explores the valorization of building waste streams using fungal microorganisms as an organic binder for circular and regenerative biomaterials. The applied research is grounded in a low-tech vernacular methodology for exploring architectural typologies through load bearing prototypes informed by variable ways of casting, growing and drying mycelium composites.

I am the founder and director of the Telluride Environmental Science and Engineering Laboratory (TESEL).  I am also the Director of Science and Research at the Telluride Institute.  My laboratory has a portfolio of ongoing projects focused on environmental biology in alpine and subalpine ecosystems in the San Juan Mountains near Telluride Colorado.  Much of my research focuses on complex-systems biology and fungal biodiversity, including a new research initiative to assess mycorrhizal and endophytic fungi in high-elevation fens.

My research focuses on assessing how eco-friendly soil amendments affect soil microbiomes thereby enhancing soil health. By focusing on the dynamics of soil microbial communities, my research contributes to the broader understanding of nutrient cycling and the role of organic inputs in promoting resilient, microbially active soils for sustainable agriculture.

My main research interests revolve around infectious diseases, and I employ a variety of techniques such as evolutionary genomics, molecular taxonomy, field ecology, bioinformatics, and experimentation to investigate the clinical and environmental factors driving these diseases.

My name is Helbert, a researcher from Research Center for Ecology and Ethnobiology, National Research and Innovation Agency, Indonesia. My work focuses on ectomycorrhizal fungal communities in Indonesian tropical forests, especially on their biodiversity and ecology. My goal is to map ectomycorrhizal fungi distribution in Indonesian forests.

I focus my research on fungi diversity and the plant-fungi interactions in the Tropical Forest.

Ian’s research investigates the role mutualistic symbionts have in maintaining the functionality of ecological networks, and the ecophysiology of network members, under extreme and changing conditions.  He investigates these topics through the experimental manipulation of common mycorrhizal networks in field conditions, through meta-analyses, and modeling and simulation.

I am interested in plant-microbe interactions, specifically fungal symbioses in marine and coastal systems, and I am passionate about bridging the local research to implementation gap by exploring real world applications for conservation and restoration. Currently, I am investigating the seagrass microbiome, specifically associated marine fungi, on O’ahu, Hawai’i.

My lab research focuses on fungal taxonomy and ecology, mycorrhiza studies, mushroom cultivation. It focusses on the challenge of how to describe, document, understand and protect all fungal biodiversity and cultivate medicinal mushrooms. Fascinated by fungi since childhood, I’m a mycologist at the University of Vienna. I teach fungi, algae, mosses, and ferns to students. My research barcodes Austrian dung and soil fungi, contributes to IUCN Fungal Red List, bridges science and policy, and, with the Austrian Mycological Society, runs mapping and citizen‑science projects.

I work on the taxonomy, systematics, and biogeography of macrofungi, and conservation biology more broadly.

Understanding of the development of plantations by analysing above and below-ground aspects in the Philippines.

I am interested in studying the impact of global change factors on soil biodiversity, and how this relates to ecosystem functions and stability. I am particularly interested in fungal communities and their role in soils, as well as the interaction of plant and fungal communities. I mainly use high throughput sequencing in combination with field or greenhouse experiments to characterize fungal community responses to different global change factors.

I collaborate with several PNW fungal taxonomic specialists to identify and document species and their distributions at the northern limit of the Pacific Coastal Rainforest and transition zone into Boreal forests.

Microbial ecologist notoriously curious about the life of fungi. I currently work with microfluidic systems to study behaviors and interactions of filamentous fungi.

I am a mycologist and work on fungal diversity, ecology, taxonomy, climate change and restoration, as well as fungal pathology in Cameroon. I am also interested in pursuing postdoctoral research in mycorrhizal science and building a career in this area.

My work involves studying and working with soil biodiversity in various degraded sites, such as rangelands, forests, and grasslands. My primary focus is on understanding how to restore and sustain these ecosystems through biological interventions.My research and activities explore the intricate relationships between living organisms in the soil, including microorganisms, fungi, bacteria, plants, and invertebrates.
