I study the belowground interactions between plants, microbes and their environment. My research interests are about the diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in peat forests, mangrove forests, tropical forests in West Kalimantan. Apart from that, I also researched the physiology of heavy metal stress (especially mercury) in mycorrhizal plants as a basis for phytoremediation of mercury-contaminated land. Most gold mining in West Kalimantan uses mercury in the gold amalgamation process. This causes the land around the gold mining area to be contaminated with mercury. Phytoremediation efforts can be supported with mycorrhizal plants.

Understanding the role of fungi and other cryptic organisms on ecosystem functioning.

We look at how to use genetic variation of mycorrhizal fungi to improve growth of tropical crops and improve soil structure and carbon sequestration. We also study effects of AMF inoculation on AMF community structure and the interaction with the soil microbiome.

My research lab focuses on the evolution of microbial eukaryotes, specifically the fungal-like oomycetes. We use a combination of field collection, lab isolation, and molecular characterization to describe new species, explore species distributions, and dissect genomic features associated with hybridization and pathogenicity.

I am a microbial ecologist, biogeochemist, and professor at Boston University with 20+ years of experience leading research teams in ecosystem ecology, soil biogeochemistry, and environmental microbiome science. I am interested in the community ecology of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi

I study the ecology and function of ectomycorrhizal symbiosis between tree roots and soil fungi. This involves some work in the field, studying which fungi are out there and what they are doing, and a lot of experiments in the greenhouse and the lab, investigating how the plants and fungi work together from molecular and physiological perspectives.

Working with undergraduate students at University of Panamá in the Agronomy Faculty into Agroforestry Engineering, ones of our objective is strengthen their capabilities understanding how the soil and their microorganisms working on. Under this focus, We will try to  evaluate the total fungal and mycorrhizal community richness and composition that will vary with elevation due to changes in climatic influences, in addition to soil characteristics and the influence of vegetation. For that, we will be establishing plots  to collect data at several sites across the Comarca Gnabe Bouglé in partnership with GCBC -STRI project. In addition our students must be using Labs from STRI to study molecular  (DNA)  and sequencing of fungal and mycorrhizal working with Saltonstall Kristin Dr.

Currently, my research explores mycorrhizal associations in orchids.

The interdisciplinary project explores the valorization of building waste streams using fungal microorganisms as an organic binder for circular and regenerative biomaterials. The applied research is grounded in a low-tech vernacular methodology for exploring architectural typologies through load bearing prototypes informed by variable ways of casting, growing and drying mycelium composites.

I am the founder and director of the Telluride Environmental Science and Engineering Laboratory (TESEL).  I am also the Director of Science and Research at the Telluride Institute.  My laboratory has a portfolio of ongoing projects focused on environmental biology in alpine and subalpine ecosystems in the San Juan Mountains near Telluride Colorado.  Much of my research focuses on complex-systems biology and fungal biodiversity, including a new research initiative to assess mycorrhizal and endophytic fungi in high-elevation fens.
